Review of the game Star Wars: The Old Republic

Star Wars: The Old Republic is an MMO game set in the Star Wars universe. It was created by the BioWare Corporation studio under the auspices of Electronic Arts Inc, responsible, among other things, for the release of the Mass Effect and Dragon Age games. This new game can be considered a spiritual successor to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, although the gameplay mechanics used here make it a sequel to a full-fledged MMORPG. Star Wars: The Old Republic takes place three hundred years after Knights of the Old Republic. The story, therefore, sets a picture of the world roughly 3,000 to 4,000 years before the events known from the six popular films, which, however, still focus on the struggle between two opposing factions: the Jedi, representing the Galactic Republic, and the followers of the dark side of the Force, known as the Empire. Sith. After a long war, a temporary Alliance was formed, bringing some peace to the galaxy. Unfortunately, the agreement remains exceptionally fragile.

BioWare decided to add a complex historical background to the story, thus contrasting the new project with the usual standards of online role-playing games. "The Old Republic" sheds light on a previously unknown episode in the fictional Star Wars universe. As the game progresses, players will engage in dynamic multiplayer dialogues in which all group members must agree on the content of the solution, as the answer often determines the further course of the mission or its outcome. In the game, you can stand on one of the two sides of the conflict - the Jedi or the Sith, to swing your lightsaber to your heart's content. In addition to these characteristic classes, you can choose from several others. The Republic, for example, is represented by smugglers and paratroopers. Their opponents are bounty hunters and Imperial agents. All of them are characterized by different fighting styles. For example, smugglers can use the shield system and fire from cover.

The core of the gameplay, in addition to the extensive unfolding story, is specialized in exploration, combat, and development of your character's skills. An exciting feature is the companions (NPCs) that can help you in battle. Your relationship with companions depends on your actions - if they disagree with what you are doing, you can count on an appropriate comment in your address or even betrayal. Building a solid team is very important because companions help collect materials, create elements, and complete side tasks. Finally, you issue orders to the crew on board your ship, which is a vehicle and the main base for all players.

Most of the quests built into the story can be done solo. But playing with friends is much more fun, especially since some missions require a combined effort. In addition to the extensive PvE game, the developers have prepared many competitive modes. One of the most impressive examples is the so-called "battlefield," a story-based battle where two teams fight over strategic footholds (such as turrets that can destroy an approaching cruiser).

As it befits Star Wars, the game world is not limited to just one planet. You can explore the most known worlds (e.g., Coruscant, Tython, Korriban), but also some completely new ones, and even take part in space combat (made in the form of rail shooters). In some worlds, one of the two factions is dominant, while in others, the struggle for leadership continues to this day. Usually, the locations differ quite radically - the game engine is ideal for creating detailed landscapes, and the character and environment models were made in a cute comic style. Also, MMOTOP.ORG would like to remind you that on November 15, 2012, a free-to-play payment option was introduced into the game. Still, at the same time, you can also continue to pay for a monthly subscription that provides all kinds of additional services.
