First gameplay trailer and details of the mecha action MechWarrior 5: Clans

As part of the GDC 2024 exhibition, developers from Piranha Games showed media representatives their new game – MechWarrior 5: Clans. It is worth noting that this is a new game, and not DLC for MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries, since it is created on Unreal Engine 5 and has a number of significant differences.

The game will be story-oriented and will tell about the “star” (a squad of 5 fighters) of the Smoky Jaguar clan during Operation Revival – a full-scale invasion of the Inner Sphere. At the moment there is no information about the possibility of playing for other clans, but there remains hope that they can be added to the DLC. MechWarrior 5: Clans is scheduled to release on PC in 2024 (Steam EGS), as well as PlayStation 5 and Xbox S/X consoles.

The player can take control of any character: Jayden (leader), Liam, Mia, Nasir and Ezra. You can give commands to your teammates in two ways: through the “quick orders” menu and through a tactical map called Battlegrid, in which you can control the mechs like in an RTS game. But you shouldn’t spend a lot of time issuing commands – after all, all this happens in real time, and the enemy is not asleep and will easily destroy your mech, which is standing idle.

In cooperative mode, you and your friends can take control of the entire “star” and free yourself from managing a squad. But, unfortunately, progress will be saved only for the host, as is implemented in the same MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries.

In terms of gameplay, the game remained the same action game about relatively slow and dangerous walking combat vehicles of the 31st century. Players can still shoot important elements of enemy vehicles or make quick work of it with a well-aimed hit in the cockpit. The list of available mechs and the possibilities for customizing them remain questionable, because the developers can limit this to the scope of the plot.
