Valve introduced Steam Families – family access to games

Valve has introduced a set of new and existing features called Steam Families. It will replace Steam Family Sharing and Steam Family View, and will also provide unified functionality for managing access to games within a “family” group. At the moment, the functionality is in the beta version, and anyone can get access.

Steam Families can be a group of up to 6 people, and they will all have access to games within that group. Players will have separate progress saves, the ability to receive achievements on their profile, as well as full access to the “Workshop” and much more.

Briefly about the main points of the new functionality:

  • If you leave the “family”, you will be able to join a new one only after a year (this restriction does not apply during the beta test).
  • You can exclude its members from the family.
  • If your relative uses cheats or breaks the rules while playing your game, then two accounts will receive a ban: both his and yours.
  • Only one person can play one copy of the game at a time.
  • Parental controls will allow you to limit access and play time, as well as monitor children’s activity.
  • Request for payment for purchases will allow parents to pay for items selected by their children.
  • Developers and publishers may limit the participation of their games in this functionality.
  • There are restrictions on adding accounts from different regions.
  • Games available through Steam Family Sharing will remain available through Steam Families.
  • The full list of supported games can be found here here.
